A former prosecutor for Chesa Boudin's office called Brooke Jenkins has been appointed as San Francisco's new district attorney.

Brooke Jenkins was named the next district attorney by Mayor London Breed on Thursday. Voters ousted Chesa Boudin in a special recall election last month. Jenkins is both Black and Latina, and will be the first Latina district attorney in San Francisco.

"We are a city that believes in second chances." But the fact is that we must draw a line with those who choose hatred, violence, and a life of crime," Jenkins said during a news conference announcing her appointment. "I want to be clear: holding offenders responsible does not prevent us from going forward with critical and crucial criminal justice system improvements."

 Boudin, a former public defender elected in 2019, was defeated in a recall election on june 7 spurred by public safety concerns in the predominantly democratic city. residents were alarmed after seeing viral video footage of individuals stealing and abusing elders, particularly asian americans.

Breed said she picked Jenkins for her experience, sense of fairness and compassion toward both victims and offenders. The mayor did not disclose how she voted in the recall, but clashed with Boudin over enforcement. "She sacrificed her career to fight for people in this city, to fight for victims who needed a voice in the city," Breed said. Jenkins, who also considers herself a progressive prosecutor, said during the campaign that Boudin was too rigid. He eliminated cash bail for defendants and declared that minors would not be tried as adults, no matter how serious the crime.

Jenkins told The Associated Press in an interview before the election that being a progressive prosecutor meant being "creative about finding alternatives to jail, but also trying to guarantee our offenders don't reoffend." Boudin, who has not ruled out running for district attorney again, said his tenure was hampered by a pandemic that closed courts and the intense treatment and counseling programs that were used to rehabilitate convicts. Jenkins began working for the District Attorney's Office in San Francisco in 2014. She stated that she intends to run in November to complete Boudin's term until 2023.
